The Green Superblock in Tbilisi at Modernism Revisited 2026
From October 21 to 23, 2026, the international conference “Modernism Revisited: Typology – Topography – Strategy” took place in Trenčín, Slovakia, as part of the European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026 programme. The conference brought together researchers, architects, and heritage professionals to discuss the legacy of Modernism and its transformation in response to contemporary social, environmental, and urban challenges.
During the Housing session, Ekaterina Gladkova, researcher at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and member of the Green Superblock team, presented the book “Open Spaces in Large Housing Estates: The Green Superblock in Tbilisi” and the joint paper “Typologies and Transformation of Open Spaces in Large Housing Estates. The Green Superblock in Tbilisi,” co-authored with Barbara Engel (KIT) and Nikolas Rogge (KIT).
The presentation explored the role of open spaces in Soviet-era large housing estates, their spatial typologies, and ongoing transformations, highlighting the Green Superblock in Tbilisi as a case study for rethinking modernist residential environments and developing more resilient urban spaces.
The paper will be published in the forthcoming conference proceedings.
